The article approaches the educational potential of aesthetics and the arts by reviving the notion of Bildung and suggesting an interpretation that emphasizes both its social character and the role of artworks and other aesthetic expressions. This paper examines certain practices of humour, especially self-ridicule, as a kind of social pathology, drawing on the work of Erich Fromm. The paper starts with the observation that laughing at oneself is typically considered to be a positive trait. In general, self-ridicule reveals that the joker does not consider him- or herself to occupy a high ground, to be above ridicule. This kind of affirmative attitude towards laughing at oneself is also present in many philosophers’ thinking. Morally, it is stated, it is better to laugh at oneself than at others. The paper regards the issue of influence of equality and social justice principles on pension law. The author states that equality in pension law is understood in a special way, what results from a natural – for social insurance law – differentiation of entitlements and obligations in regard to subjection to insurance, type of performed work or in regard to sex. Darwin va reflexionar sobre la potencialitat de la selecció natural comparant-la amb els efectes que han aconseguit els éssers humans amb la selecció artifi cial. En aquest treball s’analitza com, encara que la similitud entre ambdós tipus de selecció és visible, hi ha també importants diferències. També es presenten dos exemples d’aplicacions de la teoria evolutiva: la possible importància de la selecció sexual en la introducció de peixos transgènics i la selecció de caràcters socials en el context d’una millora genètica respectuosa amb el benestar animal.

This dissertation focuses on the social philosophy of humor from the viewpoint of Erich Fromm’s critical humanistic thinking. The work consists of an introduction and four individual articles. The introduction discusses Fromm’s theories in relation to the phenomenon of humor to provide a basis for the articles.
